Clear space, clear mind

Plus, David Blaine on how to stay calm under intense pressure

I am able to feel present in calm, quiet places, but never at home or work. How can I bring that ability into these areas?

Locations have energy. With a few changes, you can thrive in these spaces, too.

It’s springtime. Birds are chirping, the sun is shining and leaves are budding on the trees.

In Persian culture, the first day of spring is the first day of the new year. With it comes the practice of khaneh tekani, which literally means “shaking the house.” This is also commonly referred to as spring cleaning.

Now is the perfect time to get rid of all that stuff that no longer sparks joy (Marie Kondo, anyone?) and the clutter built up over the cold, dark winter months. It’s time to store away all your big winter clothes and boots and bring out your fun and bright ones.

This year, as you clean your homeor your workspace, garage or wherever else needs cleaningI encourage you to take it one step further. Consider bringing intention to what stays in that space. Because how that space makes you feel will have a huge impact on your ability to be present and thrive.

As I’ve written about in my book Think Like a Monk, locations have energy. Some people thrive in spaces filled with big, bold colors, loud music and even louder art pieces. Others prefer minimalism and simplicity. Some of us do our best work surrounded by plants, while others prefer a cozy library. What environments will best serve you as you go through your day? That’s what I want to focus on now.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY ONESKIN

Prioritize Skin Health with Intention

Caring for your mind and body is essential—but true well-being also means honoring the health of your skin. As the body’s largest organ, skin plays a powerful role in how we age, how we feel, and how we connect with ourselves.

OneSkin, a longevity-focused company founded by a team of pioneering female PhD scientists, approaches skin care through a deeper lens—addressing aging at the cellular level. Their revolutionary OS-01 peptide targets senescent cells, often called "zombie cells," which are a major contributor to inflammation and accelerated aging.01

This is skincare as health care—daily, science-backed rituals designed to support your skin’s longevity. Topical supplements like OS-01 FACE, OS-01 EYE, and OS-01 BODY are clinically proven to reduce the biological age of your skin, helping you look and feel more vibrant over time.02

The Right Energy in the Right Environment

When we talk about presence, we often focus on the mind. Letting go. Clearing away.

But we don’t often talk about how outside stimuli can help us get there (or keep us from getting there).

Try this: Remember back in school learning about the five senses? I want you to take out a pad of paper or open a note on your device, and for each room in your home, answer these questions:

  • What sights do you see? And which ones do you want to see?

  • What sounds do you hear? Are they making you feel good?

  • What scents fill the space? Do you like them?

Let’s take a bedroom, for example. What do you see as you fall asleep? What do you hear when you first wake up? What do you smell when you enter the room?

For many of us, the answers are a cluttered bedside table, the constant buzzing or notification sounds from a phone and an overflowing laundry basket. Are those sights, sounds and scents helping or hindering our ability to be present?

What if, instead, the last thing you saw at night were neatly arranged personal items and photographs, with the sound of soft white noise playing in the background? And what if you woke up to the smell of freshly laundered linens and the gentle fragrance of a lavender-scented candle? What difference would that make to the beginning and end of your day?

You’re in control of your space. This spring, I want you to clean it and make it even better than it used to be. Your mind will thank you for it.

Community Challenge

Let’s talk about your workspace right now. How does it make you feel? What can you do to improve that? Reply to this email right now and tell me five things you can do to improve the sights, sounds and scents in your workspace. Bonus challenge: Tell me a plan to implement those changes this week. I can’t wait to read your responses.

Last week, I challenged you to check in with yourself and tell me what you were going to do to give yourself what you needed. Many of you responded feeling hurt, defeated, angry—yet still determined to do something for yourself. I am moved by your collective optimism and drive to feel better. My ask is that you keep checking in with yourselves and keep doing what you need to do.

Reader Laura responded with disappointment in not being able to find a job. But she also committed to doing what she can control, writing, “First, I can empty the trash. Then, water my plants. Meditation helps. I will be taking a walk this afternoon with my best friend. I believe in possibilities and being positive.” Keep believing, Laura.

Reader Sambhav experienced a great deal of stress taking exams, and is committed to resting, writing, “I'm looking forward to giving myself a stress-free time because I stay alone most of the time, so I need to show love to myself.” Absolutely do that, Sambhav, today and always.

For everyone experiencing challenges right now, I hear you, and I am thinking of you. My heart takes in your pain, and I breathe out relief to you.

Now on ‘On Purpose’

On Monday’s podcast episode, I spoke with the magician, mentalist and endurance artist David Blaine, who is perhaps best-known for his incredible stunts. You know the ones—being buried alive, standing in a block of ice for days, holding his breath underwater for more than 17 minutes. As you can imagine, David has a great deal of mental fortitude and a wealth of ideas about the potential of the human mind.

Timed to his new National Geographic documentary series, David Blaine Do Not Attempt, our conversation weaves in and out of David’s incredible career, exploring his mindset for overcoming physical pain and the emotional and mental strength he’s cultivated in the face of setbacks and failure. Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

Also on ‘On Purpose’: What makes you excited? When do you feel most fulfilled? What if you could live longer and feel more excited and fulfilled as you age? I recorded this episode at the Longevity Summit, where I shared wisdom from some of the world’s leading experts in health, wellness and aging. The journey to longevity isn’t about drastic changes or about chasing the latest health trends. It’s about the small, intentional choices you make each and every day. Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.
