“Your passion is for you.
Your purpose is for others.”

“How do I find my purpose?” might be one of the questions I’m asked most often.

And I understand why. I have a podcast literally called On Purpose.

But I didn’t choose that name because I had everything figured out. I chose it because I’ve spent much of my own life asking the same question, and trying to understand what makes a life feel meaningful.

It is deeply human to wonder whether we are doing what we are meant to do. It is also human to worry that we should have worked it out by now.

I hear people say all the time, “I’m almost 40 and I’m still figuring it out.” Or 50. Or 60.

There is nothing wrong with still figuring it out. We are always gathering new information about ourselves. We are discovering new strengths, developing new interests, meeting new people, and being changed by what happens to us.

The worry comes from being raised between one of two equally unhelpful ideas.

The first is: “You’ll never amount to anything.”

The second is: “You can be anything you want.”

One makes us feel small and limited. The other makes us feel as though every possible life and path is available to us, and that choosing only one means somehow falling short.

The truth is, you cannot be anything you want.

But you can become everything you are.

Love,
Jay ♥️

Today’s Takeaway

Purpose is not something you have to discover all at once, and it is not proof that you are behind if you are still asking the question. It develops as you pay attention to what keeps drawing you in, what you are naturally good at, what you care enough to keep working at, and how your experiences might help someone else.

Thanks for reading today’s wisdom.
See you back here tomorrow 🙏🏽
