Q: How do I get out of a rut?

I’ve been thinking a lot about the benefits of trying new things. New conversations. New jobs. New designs, even.

Researchers have shown that novelty helps our brains solve problems.

But it’s more than that.

Anybody who’s taken a different way home from work, created a new brand, or picked up a new hobby on a whim knows that feeling of time slowing down. The excitement of new things to think about. As physicist Richard Feynman called it, the pleasure of finding things out.

Novelty gets us out of the same old grooves and helps us find exciting new ways of living.

It can be scary, of course. What happens if you try something you don’t like? What happens if you’re not immediately good at it? What happens if you look foolish?

Einstein pointed out that, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” Even he took missteps. It’s only through trying new things, and occasionally failing at them, that we grow and get better.

You may have noticed that things look a little bit different around here. That’s because I decided to try something new. I’m excited to share that starting Monday, Weekly Wisdom is becoming The Daily Wisdom.

It’s the same helpful advice you read each week, now landing in your inbox every weekday with a totally transformed visual identity, brought to life by the talented team at Rare Days.

This newsletter has been around for a while now, but it was time to grow. I wanted each message to visually match the care and attention I put into the words I write. This newsletter, like everything else I do, is made up of so many beautiful pieces. And it was a distinct challenge to make it come together in one clear, unique form. Rare Days rose to the challenge and created a brand, visual style, and newsletter website that I find incredible.

But they offer so much more than design. Rare Days is a digital product studio that helps creators and content-led organizations build sustainable digital businesses - turning their momentum into something lasting.

On Purpose

On Monday’s episode of my podcast, I spoke with the physician, researcher, and best-selling author Dr. Sara Szal, all about your body’s hormones, and why understanding them can completely transform the way you think about your health.

It’s a beautiful conversation that reveals the connection between our biology and emotions, and how learning to manage your body’s signals is one of the most empowering steps you can take for your well-being.

Today’s Wiser Choice

This week, I want you to try inserting some delightful novelty into your routine. If you’re not ready for a full rebrand, I want you to commit, right now, to doing something small and novel every single day. For example, watching a movie you’ve never heard of, trying out a new dinner recipe, or calling a friend you haven’t talked to in a long time. It can be really small. Or really big. Just try something new each day. And see how it feels.

Got a different take? Send Jay an email! He’d love to hear it.
