Today’s Wisdom

Challenges show us what we truly value and who we want to become.

Read time: 5 minutes.
This is your permission to pause and take a little time for yourself.

There’s an old saying I want to share with you.

“You keep asking God to change your situation, not realizing that God may have put you in the situation so you could change.”

You can think about this idea in a lot of different ways, but at its core, I think it is saying something very simple: we often try to escape difficult experiences before we have understood what they are here to show us.

The challenge itself may be the opportunity to change, but what does that actually look like in real life?

Say you’re in a difficult job. Your boss doesn’t listen to you. You don’t feel heard. You don’t see room for growth or a future there.

There are two ways you can understand that experience. The first: as something you need to get away from. The second: as something that may be teaching you something.

  • Maybe it’s revealing how much you struggle to speak up for yourself.

  • Maybe it’s helping you identify what doesn’t feel meaningful, so you can better recognize what truly does.

  • Maybe, by watching someone else fail to lead well, you’re learning the kind of leader you never want to become.

None of that means you have to stay. You can still leave the job. You can still decide that the environment is wrong for you. But there is a difference between leaving because you cannot tolerate the experience anymore, and leaving having understood what the experience changed in you.

Sometimes the most useful thing a difficult season gives you is not a better reason to stay, but a bigger idea of who you want to be when you go.
