We all want to chase our dreams.

  • A more fulfilling career.

  • Deeper relationships.

  • A life that feels aligned with who we truly are.

But for many people, those dreams stay just out of reach. Not because they lack ambition or ability, but because something else is standing in the way.

That something… is discomfort.

Discomfort is the friction between who you’ve been and who you’re becoming.

It’s felt in the deep breath as you hover over “send.” It’s the feeling of your stomach dropping when you know a conversation can’t wait any longer. It’s that subtle dread that shows up when you think about the thing you’ve been avoiding.

In the moment, avoiding difficult things might feel more comfortable, but the paradox most people don’t see is this:

Comfort today often creates discomfort tomorrow, but discomfort today often creates comfort tomorrow.

I’m going to say that another way.

Choosing comfort by avoiding difficult things just puts off the discomfort one more day. Choosing discomfort now means tomorrow will feel lighter – more comfortable.

The key is to make the “uncomfortable” manageable.

You don’t need to take a dramatic leap. You just need to find the smallest amount of discomfort you can take on today. Taking on small amounts of discomfort trains you to get comfortable with the uncomfortable.

Let me give you an example.

If you want a more fulfilling career, focus on the smallest scary step you can take today that will move the needle forward.

  • Reach out to someone whose work you respect and ask them for a chat.

  • Send a message to a new connection on LinkedIn.

  • Set aside time on the weekends to learn something new.

Small, intentional steps compound into meaningful change over time.

The life you’re dreaming of isn’t as far away as it may seem.

It begins with one decision you’re capable of making today, followed by another decision tomorrow – each one bringing you closer until, one day, it’s no longer a dream, but your reality.

Today’s Wiser Choice

Try This: Start by asking yourself:

  • What have I been saying no to that I know I need to say yes to? Maybe it’s: rest, a conversation, a creative project, a boundary. Write it down clearly. Be specific.

  • What have I been saying yes to that I need to start saying no to? Maybe it’s: overcommitting, scrolling on your phone, people-pleasing. Name it without judgment.

  • What’s the smallest step I can take today in the right direction? Maybe it’s: sending the email, declining one invitation, going to bed earlier. Just one small action that aligns with what you truly want.

The goal is to begin living with intention instead of by default. Try making choices today that reflect the life you want to live.

On Purpose

Yesterday, I sat down with my dear friend Nischa Shah, a former investment banker and accountant who walked away from a high-status corporate career to help people rethink their relationship with money, success, and freedom. In this episode, Nischa reflected on the “dark phase” she experienced while climbing the corporate ladder, realizing that the prestige and polish of banking had created a deep disconnect from her true self. Nischa invited listeners to confront a powerful question many of us avoid: “Would I still be happy if I were living the same life five or ten years from now?”
