Most people think getting ahead in their career is about chasing a passion.

I was once guilty of believing this too — just find what lights you up and the path will reveal itself. But in a world moving this quickly, passion without skills is not a plan. It’s simply a starting point.

Getting good at something matters more than simply loving it. And if you do love something enough, you should want to get better at it. You should want to learn more.

I’m going to give you an example from my own life.

For a long while now, I’ve been curious about AI. But as someone who doesn’t work in the AI industry, my passion and curiosity about it would have been stuck if I didn’t educate myself. In fact, I could never have offered you an AI Coaching Companion without first doing the work to understand how it could serve you, and how it could help my wisdom go even further than I ever could alone.

That is why the right learning platform matters. Finding a platform like Coursera that offers something for everyone is important. Learning also allows you to ask hard questions of a topic (or of yourself) and put all of those curiosities to the test. You may realize that the thing you felt drawn to at first isn’t the thing you really want. You may even find something else that lights you up instead.

Remember, the goal is not just to love what you do, but to become the kind of person who can do it well.

Passion gets you started. Skills keep you going.
