When we think about the people who shape us, we usually think of the guides, the heroes, and the mentors.

We reflect on those who embody the wisdom, the skills, or the life we hope to have for ourselves.

But the truth is: some of the most profound growth in life comes from the people who show you who not to be.

We’ve all encountered people who carry bitterness, who choose anger over understanding, or who let their unresolved pain hurt those around them. In the moment, dealing with that energy can feel incredibly difficult and draining. It’s easy to meet that hardness with resentment.

But if we shift our perspective slightly, we can see that these people are actually offering us a gift – they are showing us a path we do not want to walk.

When someone treats you unkindly, they are teaching you how precious kindness is. When someone reacts with judgment, they are showing you the burden of a closed mind. They are drawing a clear line in the sand, helping you realize what kind of energy you don’t want to embody.

If you are healing from a difficult relationship, a harsh boss, or a complicated family dynamic, try to look back with a sense of gentle appreciation. They may not have given you a roadmap for success, but they may have given you a compass for your soul.

They showed you what hurts, so you could choose a healthier way forward.

With love,
Jay ♥️
