Today’s Wisdom
Rest is the foundation that allows you to show up for others in a sustainable, genuine way.
Read time: 6 minutes.
This is your permission to pause and take a little time for yourself.
Do you…
Look after aging parents?
Manage a team?
Support your partner?
Hold the household together?
If you are responsible for taking care of other people, there’s a good chance you also sacrifice yourself until you’re running on empty.
I recently spoke with a woman who devoted 18 months to caring for her mother with dementia. She spoke vulnerably and openly about the heavy toll it took on her – the constant emotional effort of holding someone else’s world together while trying not to let her own crumble.Â
It made me think of a concept in medical research that refers to family caregivers as the invisible second patients. When so much of your life is dedicated to taking care of someone else, it’s easy to lose sight of yourself. Operating from this place – from emotional and physical depletion – doesn’t allow you to show up as your best self or give the kind of love you are capable of giving. Instead, it forces you to give from a place of exhaustion.
Taking time for yourself, even just 15-30 minutes a day, isn't selfish. It's how you ensure that the people you love get the best of you, rather than just what’s left of you.
Rest is the foundation that allows you to show up for others in a sustainable, genuine way.Â
Love,
Jay ❤️
