We are often told that the ultimate goal of life is to be happy.

Most of us chase it like a destination, believing that if we can eliminate the stress, sadness, and discomfort, we will finally arrive at happiness.

But I want to share something with you: the goal of life isn’t just happiness.

I believe that one of the goals of life is self-realization, and that journey requires all different emotions. When we make happiness the only acceptable state of being, we end up running away from moments that are meant to shape us.

Growth often means learning how to sit with every other emotion that’s not happiness.

Think about how we live our lives. When the sun is up, it’s easy to look at the light and find your way. But light only lasts for a portion of the day. Darkness is also necessary. If we don’t know what to do in the darkness, we become lost when the sun goes down.

Consider this: what do you do at night to get ready for bed? You don’t fight the fading light, and if you’ve tried, you know that’s a losing battle. So what do you do instead? You slow down, you adapt to the evening, you prepare for sleep.

When you stop fearing the night, something beautiful can happen. You realize that when the world goes quiet and dark, you are able to sit in the darkness and observe the stars.

Do not rob yourself of your own depth by only chasing the sun.

With love,
Jay ♥️
