Today’s Wisdom
Effort without clarity is just exhaustion, but effort aligned with direction becomes your transformation.
Read time: 4 minutes.
This is your permission to pause and take a little time for yourself.
We tend to measure our worth by how hard we push ourselves and how much energy we exhaust.
I’ve caught myself in that trap before – believing that if I just grind a little harder, the path forward will look clearer. But lately, I’ve been reflecting on the conversation I had with Olympic medalist and Stanford graduate Eileen Gu on On Purpose.
She shared a brilliant perspective that I want to share with you today: Hard work is overpraised, but direction is underrated.
So many of us are exhausted not because we lack discipline or drive, but because we are pouring our best energy into the wrong direction. We mistake movement for momentum, but momentum doesn't come from pushing a boulder up a hill. It comes from taking a step back, finding the right path around it, and letting your purpose carry you forward.
When you take the time to clarify your direction, the effort you invest can build something meaningful. Effort without clarity is just exhaustion, but effort aligned with direction becomes your transformation.
Love,
Jay ❤️
What might change if you stopped asking “How can I work harder?”
In this episode, Olympic gold medalist Eileen Gu and I unpack why direction matters far more than raw effort. We explore how to break free from burnout, channel your inner fire, and stop defining your self-worth by how hard you grind.
