Today’s Wisdom

Seeing an expectation as something you’re trusted with, not burdened by, turns pressure into purpose.

Read time: 6 minutes.
This is your permission to pause and take a little time for yourself.

It's a question I recently explored with Ezra Frech, a two-time Paralympic gold medallist and dedicated disability advocate.

"You're such a phenomenal spokesperson for your community," I told him. "But I imagine that comes with pressure. I imagine that comes with weight."

His response offered a really remarkable perspective on purpose, and I want to share it with you today.

❝

"It is a beautiful burden. I think about this all the time. I will spend my life committed to this cause, and that is, for me, genuinely what I feel like I was put on this earth to do. So there is no negativity in that. There is beauty in that, there is gratitude in that, there is love in that. And that's the way I see it. Sometimes people feel pressure, feel stress, feel fear, feel expectation, and it feels like it weighs them down. … I actually see it in the inverse."

Ezra Frech, On Purpose

What’s so powerful here is that Ezra isn’t denying the weight of his responsibility. He isn’t suggesting that serving an important cause comes without any burden at all. He’s simply choosing to see that weight differently: as a beautiful burden.

I love that reframe because purpose is never just about using our skills and talents in service to ourselves. It’s about how we use them to serve others, even when doing that requires us to stay committed to things that aren’t always easy. If your purpose has ever felt too heavy to carry, I want you to listen to my full On Purpose conversation with Ezra today.

Then, reflect on these three journal prompts:

✍🏽 When has your purpose felt more like pressure than possibility?

✍🏽 What brings you the greatest sense of honour in the work you do?

✍🏽 What expectation might feel lighter if you approached it with gratitude and love, rather than stress and fear?

Purpose doesn’t ask you to put down your responsibility. Sometimes, it asks you to remember why you chose to carry it in the first place.

With beauty, gratitude, and love,
Jay ❤️
