There's a moment most of us know well.
Something doesn't go the way you planned. A door closes. A relationship shifts. A version of the future you were counting on disappears. And someone, meaning well, tells you to look on the bright side.
“Find the silver lining” has become one of those phrases that sounds helpful but can feel dismissive when you're the one handling the difficult situation... as if the right response to something painful is to immediately locate its upside and move on.
What I've come to understand is that the silver lining isn't something you find by looking away from the hard thing.
You find it by going deeper into it.
Every difficult season I've moved through has eventually revealed something I wouldn't have learned if I hadn’t gone through it.
A clarity that only came from the confusion
A strength I didn't know I had until I needed it
A direction that only became visible once the original path closed
None of those learnings arrived because I rushed past the pain to find the lesson. They arrived because I stayed with them long enough to let them teach me.
The silver lining is evidence that even the experiences that feel the most like setbacks are preparing you for what you can't yet see.
This doesn't mean every hard thing in life has a happy ending. It means that within every hard thing, there is something worth finding. Something that makes you more of who you were always meant to become.
You just have to be willing to look.
When life doesn't go as planned, what do you usually do first?
