Addressing uncomfortable patterns early builds trust instead of resentment.

Read time: 6 minutes.
This is your permission to pause and take a little time for yourself.

For years, whenever I found myself in an uncomfortable dynamic, I would push my discomfort down, hoping time would dissolve it. I found myself always trying to keep things calm, but what I’ve learned is that when I only prioritize external harmony, it begins to create internal tension.

In psychology, this friction is rooted in Cognitive Dissonance Theory, which is the tension of holding two clashing ideas at once, for example, “I value honesty,” and “I stay silent to keep the peace.” To reduce that tension, we often rewrite the story instead of changing the behaviour. That relief is temporary. The mismatch is still there.

Here’s what I want you to know:

Silence is not automatically kindness. Sacrificing your own peace to keep things at bay is not admirable. When you avoid conflict, the friction doesn't disappear. It turns into resentment, which suggests that ignoring your feelings actually exacerbates conflict.

If you find yourself constantly swallowing your truth to preserve the calm, consider this a gentle reminder to step into the discomfort early. Peace is about the presence of honesty, clear boundaries, and empathy for yourself and others, even if it means having a hard conversation.

You deserve to stop treating your own voice as an afterthought.

Love,
Jay ❤️

I encourage you to notice where you might be holding your real thoughts back just to keep an uncomfortable dynamic calm on the surface, and consider what it might look like to honour your inner voice.
