We often recognize change by what we can see.
A new role. A new chapter. A moment that signals something has shifted.
But the deeper transformation tends to happen somewhere less visible.
It unfolds when the roles fall away and you’re left with your own thoughts, your own patterns, your own questions. That stretch of time can feel uncertain, even uncomfortable, but it’s where people begin to understand who they are without the labels they’ve carried.
I was thinking about this when I sat down with Hilary Duff on my podcast, On Purpose.
Many people know her through the roles she’s played over the years. It would be easy to trace her life through those milestones. As we spoke, a different story began to take shape.
She spoke about time spent on her own, without the structure of a relationship or the expectations that often come with being seen publicly. Those moments asked her to listen more closely to herself and to grow in ways that weren’t visible to anyone else.
That kind of work rarely draws attention, yet it shapes everything that follows.
We also spoke about family, about the complexity that exists in relationships over time, and about a feeling many people carry without saying it out loud.
But what stayed with me most was how she’s allowed every version of herself to exist without trying to erase the one that came before.
Growth, in her case, feels like expansion rather than replacement.
If you’ve ever found yourself in a season where things feel unclear or undefined, I encourage you to download March’s copy of On Purpose Magazine for a deeper understanding of Hilary’s story.

Today’s Wiser Choice
Try This: Take a few minutes to sit with yourself without distractions. Grab a notebook and begin writing about where you are in your life right now.
Don’t focus on the titles you hold or the milestones you’ve reached. Focus on who you are beneath all of that.
Let your thoughts flow freely:
What are you outgrowing?
Does anything feel different about you lately?
What are you starting to understand more clearly?
Don’t try to organize it. Just let it surface.
Then, read back what you wrote and underline anything that isn’t visible to others: a shift in mindset, a new boundary, a deeper level of self-awareness. This is about recognizing how you’re expanding in ways that matter most.
