Q: Jay, how can I (genuinely) be authentic in a world of fake online personalities?

Let’s start here:

What comes to mind when I say the term “personal brand?”

Do you have positive associations? Maybe you’ve developed a personal brand yourself, and have seen the benefits. Maybe you cultivate an online presence that helps you in your work, or your personal life.

Or do you have negative feelings? Do you immediately think of inauthentic connections, overly posed photographs, and perfectly manicured feelings?

Maybe it’s a mix of both. So, I’d like to offer you a reframe. Your personal brand is just your purpose… said out loud.

A lot of us get tripped up on the whole concept, because the idea that you are a brand that needs to be promoted online doesn’t feel natural. It also feels like a business.

And to be fair, that’s a valid feeling. This isn’t the world most of us were born into, and not everyone is an entrepreneur. But, cultivating an online presence that accurately reflects your values is not just the foundation for a modern career, it is also a way to present yourself to the world as an individual.

The online world we live in can be used to represent who you are, just as much as what you do. Either way, it’s about showcasing your values.

I’ll give you an example.

A friend of mine was revamping his LinkedIn account. He’s a very colorful, energetic guy, with a lot of different interests and skillsets. But his LinkedIn page was lifeless and flat. It only showed off a small piece of his personality: the dry stuff he did at university that he thought might earn him a job. At the recommendation of another friend, he added his extracurricular skills and values, injecting the profile with his full personality. At first he thought…

- Why would employers care if I host a free comedy show each month?
- Why would anyone care that I volunteer at the pet shelter on weekends?
- What if they liked me better when they knew less?

All very normal fears and worries.

But guess what? Within a month he was hired for a job that uniquely fit his whole skillset. And his personality. And — he found better connections and online friends as a result. He’s even joined a new group on LinkedIn dedicated to connecting entertainers to one another. A personal benefit he didn’t see coming.

Now, I know it can be a little overwhelming to get started. We all feel that resistance, the voice that says, “Who am I to post this?” or “What if it’s not good enough?” I’ve felt that way too — a lot. I’ve worked for years to cultivate a personal brand that reflects my purpose. But I didn’t build it overnight. I built it by showing up consistently and sharing what mattered.

My goal has always been to start with my values and then move from there… and I know it’s working because my personal brand has helped me connect with people like you. People who lead from value and want to create a better, happier world.
