Q: Hey Jay, is there anything I can do to help calm my mind so I can sleep?

Tell me if this sounds familiar.

Your alarm goes off on a Wednesday morning. You don’t want to get out of bed. You snooze your alarm. You miss your workout because you’re so tired. You reach for a cup of coffee. And decide to toss a little extra sugar in there today, because you “need” it.

It may work temporarily, but over the course of the day, you’re still frazzled, impatient, and irritable. You make mistakes. You get into arguments with your partner.

I could go on, but you get the idea.

Sleep truly is the bedrock on which the rest of your life depends, no pun intended. When you sleep better, your body just feels better. And your life starts to work better.

But how do you actually do it?

A few weeks ago, I shared my top 5 sleep rituals. Those are a great place to start. But if you’ve ever had a tough time falling asleep, you know that one of the biggest obstacles to getting rest is your mind. You’re tossing and turning, and at the same time thinking, “Oh no I should really get some sleep.”

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine points out that it’s a bad idea to try forcing yourself to sleep when it’s not happening naturally.

Instead, what I recommend is doing some nightly affirmations. Here are some you can use right away; though if you want to create your own you can scroll down for my instructions on how to do so.

First, make yourself comfortable in bed. Then, say silently to yourself:

I am allowing myself to rest.
I am allowing myself to refuel and rejuvenate.
I am allowing myself to sleep deeply tonight.
I am allowing myself to wake up tomorrow feeling refreshed and energized.

Repeat these while breathing slowly and deeply. Hopefully, they’ll help you wind down into rest.

What I love about it is that it actually supports my body's natural sleep cycle. It adjusts the temperature on each side of the bed, so Radhi and I can completely personalise our sleep environment. It also tracks my sleep patterns and recovery, which helps me understand what my body needs rather than guessing.

I’ve felt more centred in the mornings. My mind is clearer, my energy lasts longer, and I’m able to show up more intentionally throughout the day. And this isn’t just my experience, the Pod 5 has been clinically proven to boost daytime energy by 34 per cent and add up to an extra hour of high‑quality sleep each night.

If you’re ready to invest in better rest, now is the time.

Affirmations can be even more powerful if you make them yourself. You can think of an affirmation like this. Whenever you have a negative thought, like “I’ll never fall asleep,” replace that with an empowering opposite. Like, “Sleep is natural, I will fall asleep.” Then repeat it to yourself, calmly and gently, while taking deep breaths.

Try This: Write down the loudest negative thoughts about sleep that get to you around bedtime. Those things that echo around your mind keeping you awake.

Next to each of them, write an encouraging and positive opposite. Those are your personal affirmations.
